so, this is random.

after years of trying to persuade various dentists in several states to remove the permanent retainer attached to my bottom teeth, i am happy to report that victory is mine. (i also learned that the magic words are “it interferes with my ability to properly floss.” turns out that a dentist’s fear of destroying a colleague’s work is surpassed only by their love of flossing)

so this morning, after 14.5 years together, that tiny piece of bonded metal and i parted ways. it took several high powered drills and about 15 minutes but i can now feel the back of my lower teeth. unfortunately, my mouth feels like it belongs to a stranger and my tongue doesn’t quite sit properly in it’s new space, resulting in a slight speech impetiment situation. (hey, i said slight!)

Of course, in addition to pressing and giving away a limited-edition set of Royal City prints, we’re also streaming the album over at MBV.

i’ve listened to this twice already this morning. two reasons for this: a. i really like it and b. it keeps looping.
at this rate, it will be well ingrained into my subconscious by 2pm. (no complaints)

The contest goes until Friday of this week, and we’re trying our best to get our reblogs together for the Goods 4 Good cause.
If you have a moment to reblog this post, we’d greatly appreciate it.
(And make sure to include the following text when you reblog)

last week i had the distinct pleasure of seeing will oldham perform at the apollo theater (sixth row even, luck indeed). if you know me, you know that i love this man’s music, but have never actually seen him live. (unless you count the time that i randomly saw him in a nashville coffeehouse—on my 25th birthday—but that’s another story for another day).

anyhow, the show was fantastic, his band was amazing and mr. oldham with his eyeliner, painted fingernails and plaid shirt perfomed with a childlike enthusiasm and excitement that i wasn’t expecting but totally loved. it was a lively show and i recommend that you see him on this tour if you have the chance. completely, 100% worth it.

as a child, one of the things that made me most happy was lying in a pile of laundry that had just been taken out of the dryer. this irritated my mother to no end (understandably, since she was trying to fold all of it).

this photo totally reminds me of that, in the best way.

aa bondy (with the felice brothers) at the bottletree cafe in birmingham, al.

i’m sorry, i can’t stop myself from posting about other alabamians—especially those from b’ham. i’m really into his folky solo album. (and yes, i am barely old enough to remember verbena. barely.)

AND if this weren’t enough of a walk down memory lane already…check out mr. bondy being interviewed last summer by my lovely friend and neighbor, jonny santos. worlds collide, people.

Of course, it’s personal and absolutely legitimate, but it worries me because it begs the question, “Did you not know that a filmmaker has to be able to ask questions, rather than come up with answers? Are you so used to the formulas by now that that’s all you can take? Is your diet so sated with one kind of nutrition that you become intolerant to any other?”
-tilda swinton on the critical reception of “the limits of control”
ifc.com just put up a great interview with tilda swinton. she discusses her role as a “titular bar floozy, a barely in control alcoholic who bullshits her way through every selfish, reckless moment of her day” in erick zonca’s new film, “julia.” she also talks a bit about the new jarmusch film “the limits of control,” which she stars in.
it’s an interesting read, whether you are a fan of swinton or not (although, why would you not be?)

despite last night’s rainy dreariness, one of my roommates and i decided to take a long, rambling walk in the drizzle and ended up at the loney, dear show at MHoW.

i’ve always liked loney, dear but i’ve never been a die hard fan. luckily, the music is perfect for a rainy night and Emil Svanängen charmed us with his stage banter.

most amusing moment of the night:

“i heard someone ask for ‘carrying a stone’ earlier and i didn’t have the heart to tell them that i’d already played it…”
