article in ny times on huntsville, al →
i actually really like the city of huntsville for multiple reasons. besides the fact that it is really the only other “big” city in alabama (birmingham being the largest), most of my dad’s family resides either in hunstville or the surrounding areas. (my dad was born there as well). despite all of the time i have spent in and around the city, i sometimes forget what a large...
i am buried in books...
this is a great problem to have, i just wish that i didn’t have so many other things that i wanted to watch/do. i am going to have to start a routine reading time every night or i am never going to get through all of these. the books creating the problem: clive james’s cultural amnesia, gore vidal’s burr, the letters of flannery o’connor, 2007’s best nonrequired...
i really enjoy personality tests. not the lame “what celebrity are you most like” ones or the ones where your favorite color, animal, etc is supposed to magically reveal the inner workings of your mind. that’s total crap.
i mean the real deal: the myers-briggs/jung tests and/or the keirsey temperament tests. although it is not 100% accurate (of course) it is close enough that it...
i have a confession to make.
i love love love…plaid.
it’s true and it has sort of taken me by surprise. for the most part, my wardrobe consists of clothing in the black, white, grey, brown, navy ranges. i don’t like a lot of bright color or prints. despite this, i have somehow fallen hard for plaid.
actually, i am a little bit obsessed. red plaid, black and white plaid, blue and black plaid, green...
what is your dangerous idea?
‘dangerous’ does not mean exciting or bold; it means likely to cause great harm. the most dangerous idea is the only dangerous idea: the idea that ideas can be dangerous.
we live in a world in which people are censured, demoted, imprisoned, beheaded, simply because they have opened their mouths, flapped their lips, and vibrated some air. yes, those vibrations can make us feel sad or...
top nine albums of 2007
yeah, so there are only nine. i sat down to make this list and could only come up with nine albums that i consistently loved and enjoyed this year. i am not adding a tenth sub-par one just to round it out. so, here are my picks in no particular order: arcade fire neon bible-it’s dark, moody and at times feels larger than life (my body is a cage especially). there was no way that i was not...

sufjan's fans love him...i mean really, really...
so much so that otherwise normal twenty-something year old girls giggle like gradeschoolers and will stand near the edge of the stage during a panel-based, literary (seated) event. it was quite fascinating to watch actually. i’m all for being a sufjan fan, he’s fantastic and it was incredibly endearing to watch him answer all of those literary questions…but you should know the...

love her. can’t wait for this.
cyber-bullying? this is a new low →
when i read about things like this it actually makes me ashamed to be a part of american popular culture. how can kids think this is acceptable behavior and how can parents be so oblivious? kids are terrible to each other and it’s really upsetting on many levels. ughh.
can bob dylan save a whole village? of course he... →
it’s slightly humorous that the main argument for the historical preservation of the south village is that bob dylan lived, played, worked, etc there. clearly, they have my vote.
i might be sorta addicted to command shift 3 →
this is SO fun. maybe more fun than the website where you give word definitions and get those little grains of rice that are supposed to feed people in third world countries. and so far, i only voted against one for non-design reasons (i couldn’t vote for a site that offered a “good person” test and “tickets to heaven”. frightening. it was just a plus that the design...
canon blue's halcyon EP for free →
my friend dan (canon blue) is offering his newest ep for free. dan’s music is fantastic (as is his live show. if he tours near you, go see him immediately).
color me whatever →
the happy corp has an interesting post about color labels and moodtags for both gmail and itunes. while the itunes one looks really fun, i doubt that i would ever seriously use it. the gmail one however, might actually make a difference in my inbox.

ebay china has a style section?
yes, apparently this is true. i had no idea (but i am not a huge ebay-er, american or otherwise). however, i was stopped in the street today on my way back from the whole foods lunch run by a very nice chinese lady with a very nice digital camera. she told me that she was a photographer for ebay china and she was putting together some sort of fashion photo spread. it was serious business, she took...

an entire show made up of artists personal projects? count me in.

co-worker #1: what is that in your hair?
co-worker #2: it's my special holiday hairpiece
co-worker #1: what is it made out of?
co-worker #2: a bra strap and a hair clip
co-worker #1: you made it?
co-worker #2: no, i bought it from the little asian man on the street
co-worker #1: i see
Gothamist: Todd Patrick, Concert Promoter →
i stole this link from kel: kellyreeves i love todd p. his email blasts are a bright spot in my work day. mostly because he signs them “with tons o’ love from todd p” (or some version of that phrase). he’s also fond of using “howdy”, “y’alls” and occasionally “homies”
my hair is talented...
namely because it manages to change color from day to day on it’s own. no joke. it likes to fluctuate between the auburn (which is actually the natural color) and brown ranges, but sometimes depending on lighting and level of cleanliness, it can achieve an almost blonde tint. impressive, i know.
memo to random guys in laundrymats:
no matter how personable or attractive you may be, it still doesn’t change that fact that i have no desire to strike up a conversation with a stranger while i am folding my underwear. even if you are super nice and help me find an empty dryer…still weird.
juno made me laugh out loud and (almost) cry
i saw the hyped teen pregnancy comedy juno this afternoon and before the nationwide love fest (and inevitable dialogue quoting) begins, i want to declare my own love.
this movie is fantastic.
the whole cast is incredible, but ellen page blew me away. her character is the impregnated, awkward, quirky, wise-cracking, clever little sister that i always wanted (ok, maybe minus the impregnated...
(my friends are very observant...)
jerry: hey don't we know that girl?
megan: what girl?
jerry: you know, the girl whose eyes always look just a little bit too far apart
one thing is true about johnny depp: the dude can work some eye makeup better than any other man alive.
irish salmon wiped out by rogue jellyfish →
the term rogue jellyfish creates an interesting mental picture.
millennials in the workplace →
interesting segment on 60 minutes about my generation’s place in the working world. i don’t agree with everything (i have great parents, but was not raised with the “you are always a winner” philosophy). some great observations overall and worth watching nonetheless. and yes, i totally blame mr. rogers.

books make safe gifts for kids
– the sign on the door of borders this afternoon. i suppose it is a reference to the lead paint fiasco, but really? i could get behind “fun gift” or maybe “educational gift” or even the generic “great gift.” but “safe gift?” that just reads very...

apocalyptic re-creation of manhattan (in an apt!) →
besides the fact that this is amazing (i personally love the building wallpaper) my favorite line is “What, Gothenburg wasn’t good enough to ruin?” HAHA. Gothenburg. that’s brilliant. i love it.
my favorite thing about mornings (and the only reason i am motivated to get out of bed) is coffee.
